Forty-nine migrants (45 men and four women) were rescued by the Coast Guard from a boat drifting off the coast of Cagliari. All are believed to be Tunisian.
The Coast Guard's patrol boat CP 307 rescued them and brought them ashore, docking at a quay in the canal port. According to reports, they had run out of food and water on board for four days. Six of them required medical attention.
If this reconstruction is confirmed, it would be a new form of the phenomenon : the journeys to Sardinia generally take place from Algeria using small boats, which carry a maximum of ten passengers.
It cannot be ruled out, however, that the boat they were travelling on lost its course and ended up by mistake in the Gulf of Cagliari.
All migrants were provided with medical care before undergoing identification procedures. Once the process is complete, they should all be transferred to the first reception center in Monastir, which has seen a significant increase in the number of guests in recent days.
