Sardinia has also been included in the Camino de Santiago, the most famous spiritual pilgrimage in the world.

The announcement was made by Maltese Culture Minister Owen Bonnici and Foreign Minister Ian Borg during a public information session.

Malta, Sicily, Barcelona and Santiago de Compostela were also included in the itinerary.

The Camino de Santiago has as its destination the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, a region of northwestern Spain, erected in homage to St. James the Greater and where the relics of the apostle are said to be found.

The itinerary has several routes throughout Europe and Pope Alexander VI declared it, in 1492, one of the "three great pilgrimages of Christianity".
