After months of waiting, the machine takes off: the “Nuove Rotte” call for proposals, the project promoted by the Region to enhance the Island’s connectivity, has been officially published in the Official Journal of the European Union. From today, for sixty days, airlines will be able to apply to open new routes, supported by an incentive that will cover up to 50% of airport costs. A golden opportunity not only for carriers, but also for the relaunch of tourism and territorial development.
"With the New Routes call," explains Transport Councilor Barbara Manca, "we want to guarantee our citizens new travel opportunities , with a broader, more stable offer that can overcome the limits of seasonality and, at the same time, make Sardinia more accessible to tourists. We have worked with rigor and vision to identify strategic routes, capable of stimulating demand and attracting the interest of companies. Now we hope that the market will respond positively to this challenge."
The concept is reiterated by the Councilor for Tourism, Franco Cuccureddu : «We have collaborated with the Department of Transport to identify, on the basis of the scientific analysis of data on flows, new routes consistent with the targets we aim for to propose the different tourism products of Sardinia. We trust that at least a part of the 67 new routes put out to tender for a three-year period, both national and international, can be assigned, thus opening our Island to new interesting markets».
The tender includes 67 routes, divided between the three Sardinian airports . From Cagliari airport: Ajaccio, Berlin, Birmingham, Bordeaux, Brest, Bucharest, Cluj, Cork, Dubai, Dubrovnik, Edinburgh, Eindhoven, Philadelphia, Hannover, Helsinki, Istanbul, Kaunas, Vilnius, Lamezia Terme, Lille, Leipzig, Lisbon, Liverpool, Łódź, Malaga, New York, Nice, Oslo, Riga, Rotterdam, Tallinn, Tirana, Zagreb. From Alghero airport: Hamburg, Basel, Berlin, Bilbao, Bristol, Cagliari, Cologne, Eindhoven, Geneva, Lyon, Manchester, Oslo, Porto, Prague, Sofia, Stuttgart, Stockholm, Valencia, Warsaw. While from Olbia airport: Cagliari, Dortmund, Helsinki, Istanbul, Lisbon, Malaga, Liverpool, New York, Newcastle, Palma de Mallorca, Porto, Reykjavik, Rotterdam, Seville, Vilnius.
Among the most significant innovations, the intercontinental routes to the United States (New York and Philadelphia), and the connections with strategic hubs such as Istanbul , designed to strengthen the interconnection between Sardinia, Europe and non-European areas. The call for tenders was sent by the Region to the European Commission on March 28th. In the next few hours, the notice will also be available on the institutional website of the Region.
