The most common surname in Sardinia is Sanna , with over 17,000 people carrying it. Piras and Pinna also find space on the podium, with 15,000 and 12,000 respectively. This is highlighted by the page "Origin of Italian surnames", which on Facebook opens a focus on the birth of those of the island.

Many, they explain in the post, derive from toponyms, such as the surname Bitti or Onnis , which was born as Fonnesu, from Fonni. But Desogus also owes its origin to the village of Sogus, just as Cherchi is a legacy of the ancient village Kerki, in Nurra. Many Sardinian surnames, on the other hand, were inspired by animals, from Porcu (pig) to Cadeddu (puppy dog), passing through Piga (magpie).

In some cases the reference is the patronymic, such as Corbeddu son of Corbu, in others the cue comes from the origin of the person: Cossu , for example, was born as Corsu (Corso, from Corsica), and Pisanu reveals precisely the Tuscan origin of who bore the surname.

Within the research, there is also room for the most common surnames in the various provinces: in Cagliari the most common is Melis (only fifth in the total of the region, behind Serra), while in Sassari Sanna acts as master, as in all the other provinces, with the exception of Sulcis, where Pinna is more widespread, and Ogliastra, where Lai appears: a surname which, in Sardinia, occupies only tenth place. In addition to the five already mentioned, Carta, Manca, Meloni and Mura are more present.
