"At the Ministry of the Interior there is a friend, a person who has my friendship and my trust like Matteo Piantedosi. Surely, dealing with the security, the future, the tranquility and the serenity of millions of Italians is something beautiful that everyone could only aspire to and if someone in the past could say "Salvini cannot go to the Interior because there is an ongoing trial on his conduct as minister", now this alibi no longer exists. But at this moment I am fine where I am. And then I will talk to Giorgia and Matteo, this government is a team of friends and so we will see". Thus the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Matteo Salvini in Milan, responding to those who asked him about a hypothetical return to the Viminale after the acquittal in the Open Arms trial.

"The reform of justice, the civil liability of judges who make mistakes and must answer for them personally, the separation of careers, are needed not by Matteo Salvini but by 60 million Italians. Now more than ever the reform of justice is urgent", added Salvini.

First of all, after three years, he stressed when speaking of his acquittal, "it's nice to return to Milan as a free person and not as a potential, presumed delinquent, criminal and kidnapper. It took us three years, but we reiterated that defending the borders and the homeland, protecting Italians, fighting traffickers and smugglers, sending foreign associations back to their country and illegal immigrants back to where they came from is legitimate, it's a right and a duty. And so the left should come to terms with it, I'm happy it ended like this".

"It is proof that among the 9,000 judges there are some who are free," he observed, "but the fact that I was acquitted in the first instance does not mean that justice does not need to be profoundly reformed, because every year a thousand Italians are unjustly imprisoned by mistake and released after a few months or a few years with a pat on the back."
