The ideal climate, sun and mistral breeze, framed the start of the Cagliari-Monaco, the first edition of the international offshore sailing regatta included in the "Cagliari-Montecarlo sea week" event and organized by the Lega Navale Italiana section of Cagliari with the Porto Rotondo Yacht Club and the Monaco Yacht Club, under the aegis of the Italian Sailing Federation and the patronage of the Municipality of Cagliari and the Autonomous Region of Sardinia.
The regatta includes a coastal journey of approximately 360 miles along the eastern coast of Sardinia and Corsica. An intermediate natural gate will be placed at the height of the island of Soffi, in front of Porto Rotondo, where the first times will be taken and where a possible reduction of the course could be applied. The first arrivals in Monte Carlo are scheduled for Thursday. The time limit for completing the regatta was set at 7.30pm on Friday.
For the occasion, Luna Rossa made two passes to greet the rowers during the start.
The start of the ten competing boats, at 14.02, was given in front of the Lazzaretto di Sant'Elia, just outside the Marina of Portus Karalis, very busy with participants, guests and onlookers. Adalberto Miani's Botta Dritta immediately took the lead in the competition. Four hours later, the Advance 66 was already sailing around Capo Ferrato, followed a few miles away by Furibonda, the 16-metre Sly Yacht owned by the owner Giancarlo Vedelago. For the third provisional place they engaged the challenge Mariella (yawl of 1938 by Carlo Falcone) and the Farr 40 Ginevra of the Cagliari-born Simone Camba, standard-bearer of the New Sardinia Sail project. Filippo Dore's Sixty and Shannon Falcone's F4 had to say goodbye to the company earlier than expected, both due to technical problems.
The weather forecast for tomorrow announces a strong mistral after Puntaldia, with gusts of 35 knots, which will put the participants to the test until early morning.
