68 million euros of investments for 12 interventions affecting the streets of 11 municipalities of the Metropolitan City of Cagliari. These are the numbers of the redevelopment of the roads of the Metropolitan City of Cagliari, with a priority objective: the implementation of road safety for motorists and pedestrians throughout the metropolitan area.

The public transport minimum service plan.

During the European Mobility Week, which took place in recent months, the Minimum Services Plan for local public transport prepared by the Metropolitan City to meet the needs expressed by local administrations was presented. Through the plan, the Metropolitan City is applying to take on the direct management of local public transport services for the territorial part of its competence, currently under the control of the Sardinia Region. The Plan envisages a total mileage of over 15 million kilometers per year, for a cost of 35 million euros to be covered by a transfer from the regional transport fund. The plan aims to safeguard and revolutionize the territory in a green way over the next decade. The strategies implemented to make the Metropolitan City of Cagliari more livable and sustainable speak clearly: reducing the use of private cars and motorbikes in travel from 77% to 59-62% and increasing the use of local public transport. The objective of reducing the use of cars is presented to citizens as an alternative to the daily use of the vehicle, strengthening a soft mobility system that becomes a reasoned choice in terms of time, comfort and sustainability.

Interventions in progress

on the road system front, numerous interventions have been implemented: from the restyling of the section of Viale Marconi between Quartu Sant'Elena and Quartucciu, to the two sections of the former SS 131 in Sestu, the extraordinary maintenance of multiple provincial and intermunicipal roads, including the ex Sulcitana between Elmas and Assemini, the SP 15 Maracalagonis, Settimo, Sinnai, the via Brigata Sassari between Quartu and Quartucciu, the connection between the SS 195 and the tourist port of Perd'e Sali and the Sa Cantonera junction which connects Sestu to former SS 131. Furthermore, work has already begun in recent months on the stretch of SP 15 which goes from the intersection with Via Nazionale in Maracalagonis to the border with the Municipality of Sinnai, while work has begun towards the Sa Funtanedda roundabout and those on the stretch from the roundabout of the industrial area of Sinnai to the entrance to the town centre. Also scheduled is the maintenance of the entire SP 17 from Quartu to Villasimius and of the SP 92 , the road with high commercial traffic that connects the Saline Conti Vecchi to the Pedemontana, in the Capoterra area. Also in Capoterra, the ring road inaugurated last year will be completed with the construction of the stretch between the roundabout near the football field and the junction with provincial road 1 in the Is Olias area. Significant intervention, worth over 13 million euros, for the mitigation of the hydraulic risk of the Rio Santa Lucia, which will affect a stretch of approximately 14 km falling in the municipalities of Capoterra, Assemini and Uta.

A final intervention, started between April and May, involved the creation of a safe pedestrian crossing between the Villaspeciosa railway station and the town of Uta.

The construction of the Burcei-Sinnai-Maracalagonis connection road deserves a special mention. 48 million euros have been allocated for a road that has been awaited by citizens for over twenty years, but today, thanks to the priority commitment put in place by the traffic offices of the Metropolitan City of Cagliari, work will finally begin.

These interventions are the result of intense and fruitful work by the administration and offices, in close collaboration and synergy with the municipalities involved ”, comments the metropolitan mayor Paolo Truzzu . “ A result that makes us particularly proud and demonstrates how the metropolitan city model works and brings benefits to the entire territory as a whole, and not just to the capital around which it gravitates ”.

“ There are 12 interventions requested and expected by the territories, which have as their priority objective the implementation of road safety, and in some cases concern the creation of corridors for slow mobility and new connecting roads to reduce travel times and break the isolation of some municipalities ”, underlines the metropolitan councilor delegated for roads Antonello Floris. “ An important step forward towards safer and faster traffic which will certainly have a positive impact on the quality of travel for metropolitan citizens” concludes Floris.
