Three B737 aircraft at the Elmas airport with an investment of 300 million and 90 jobs for pilots, engineers and cabin crew. More than 400 weekly flights on 39 routes starting in April .
Ryanair presents its summer plan for Cagliari airport : flights to and from London, Madrid and Vienna, Malta, Palma and Valencia. It will transport 3 million passengers to and from Cagliari.
But more can be done, explains CCO Jason McGuinness , "provided that the regional government abolishes the excessive municipal surcharge which is hindering the growth of connectivity and tourism on the Island".
A municipal surcharge that «does not exist in similar tourist islands such as the Canaries, the Balearics, Cyprus or Malta. Provided that the government of the Sardinia region eliminates the municipal surtax, Ryanair is ready to respond by bringing 2 million more passengers to Sardinia per year (+50% growth) and opening a new air base in Northern Sardinia creating over 1,500 new jobs ."
For McGuinness it is a mistake to compete between Sardinian airports: « The real challenge must not be internal, but with the Canary Islands, Morocco, Dubrovnik, none of them have the additional charge of 6.50 euros . Trieste removed this tax and we immediately opened a base, that is the key to growth."
The removal of the surcharge would also bring passengers in winter, is the belief of the low cost company: « The tax guarantees 30-40 million, but its cancellation would guarantee two million more passengers, a base between Olbia and Alghero and five aircraft in Cagliari against the current three . You have regional elections, the question to ask the candidates is how do you plan to bring tourists in the winter?".
