We are not in Verona, but a balcony can still be found in the historic center of Sassari. After all, the strength of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is precisely that of a story with universal themes, not strictly linked to the historical period. Filming has begun on a feature film inspired by the impossible love between the two young people and the dispute between Montague and Capulet. A drama revisited in a modern key, written , filmed and performed by the students of the San Donato middle school and the inhabitants of the district, led by the Sassari director and screenwriter Sergio Scavio and the director Matteo Manunta.
The film is the compendium of "Comizi d'amore", the new project of the San Donato Neighborhood Cinema Laboratory (LCQ), an educational and social experience born six years ago in the San Donato comprehensive school, at the behest of the school director Patrizia Mercuri , and over time it has become an open window on the school and the district, a look from a perspective that overcomes prejudices and problems of one of the most complicated areas of Sassari, projecting outside the characteristics that make San Donato a multi-ethnic microcosm of humanity, authenticity, integration .
The project, which began before the summer with workshops on script writing and analysis of works, acting, costumes and scenography, held by the screenwriter Pier Paolo Piciarelli, the actor from Sassari Alessandro Gazale, the costume designer Carla Galleri and the set designer Robert Piras , continues in these days with the rehearsals and filming of the film. The group of professionals participating in the project also includes Silvio Farina as director of photography and sound engineer Andrea Campus .
The “Love Meetings” project is financed by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism and makes use of the collaboration of Intergremio, the association of traders and residents “Il Corso” and of the production company “Aguaplano”.
