This year's data will obviously have to wait until 2026, but the total also includes eight pedestrians in the first half of the year : they are the new martyrs of traffic, especially in cities, and it's sobering to note that the primary cause of accidents, including collisions with crosswalk users, is distraction, no longer excessive speed, as has been the case for decades.

And this is where smartphones come in, the most powerful distraction for drivers. Even, sometimes, for those crossing the street, keeping their eyes on the screen instead of oncoming cars .
