On the eve of March 8, Women's Day, the CGIL takes stock of the situation on the right to abortion in Sardinia , with a conference that will be held on Women's Day, at the Metropolitan Chamber of Labor of Cagliari .

The opportunity to disseminate numbers and statistics on pregnancy terminations at a regional level, with the aim of raising awareness and making people reflect.

«The situation in Sardinia and in the territory of Cagliari – explains a note from the union – is characterized by lights and shadows: the island is not at year zero in terms of application of 194, while it stands out negatively for some data, for example example the type of medical interventions used and a slightly growing trend of objectors.

THE OBJECTORS - According to Istat and Ministry of Health data processed by the Cgil Sardegna Study Center, the share of objector gynecologists in Sardinia in 2021 is lower than the national average (59.2% against 63.4% in the rest of Italy) while the number of anesthetists objectors is higher (49.7% compared to the national 40.5%) . Conscientious objection concerns non-medical personnel less: in this case the Sardinian figure (36.3%) is three percentage points higher than the Italian one.

There is one point, however, that deserves some attention: while the Italian trend, compared to 2020, is contracting, in Sardinia the percentage of objectors is growing: in 2021 there was +3.6% among gynecologists and +0 .6% among non-medical staff. The data for anesthetists is stable from 2020 to 2021 but has recorded a +9% since 2019.

As regards the structures where IVG is practiced, in 2022 there are 63.6% of authorized hospitals and nursing homes with an obstetrics department in Sardinia, a higher average than the national one which stands at 59.6%.

Pharmacological abortion, the least invasive, is practiced on the island in only 36.2% of cases, while the percentage in Italy rises to 49.2% . In this context, the metropolitan city of Cagliari stands out, aligning itself with the national figure.

The number of scrapings is significantly higher on the island: 21% compared to just 7.2% of the national average . A decidedly negative percentage if we consider that it is a technique associated with a greater risk of complications for women and that the Higher Institute of Health has launched a project to promote less invasive techniques in the Regions with a use of curettage exceeding 15%. %.

THE NUMBERS – In general, as happens in the rest of the country, the number of voluntary interruptions of pregnancy constantly decreases: in 2022 in Sardinia there were 1288 (28.6% involved the Cagliari area, 35.8% the province of Sassari ) , while there were 1382 in 2021 (numbers far from the almost 5000 Ivg in 1982).

In Sardinia, the women who resort to it are almost all adults and adults (in 45.4% of cases they are between 30 and 39 years old and in 34.8% between 20 and 29 years old - Istat 2022). They are mainly high school graduates (44.9%) or have a middle school diploma (38%) and, in over 7 cases out of 10, they are unmarried (higher than the national average which stands at 59.7%) .

“OBSTACLE COURSE” – «While France inserts the right to abortion into the Constitution, in Italy the voluntary interruption of pregnancy is still an obstacle race and even if Sardinia, the territory of Cagliari in particular, has a less critical compared to the rest of Italy, some not exactly positive data emerges", highlights the CGIL. Adding: «The obstacle course has more than one reason but it is clear that - if 46 years after the approval of law 194, more than one difficulty emerges in the path that leads to free choice in terms of IVG, (voluntary termination of pregnancy ) - something wrong. The situation in Sardinia and in the territory of Cagliari is characterized by lights and shadows: the island is not at year zero in terms of application of the 194, while it stands out negatively for some data, for example the type of medical interventions used and a slightly growing trend of objectors".

THE CONFERENCE – At the conference organized on 8 March at the Chamber of Labor of Cagliari (5pm, in viale Monastir 15) there will be speakers, in addition to the general secretary of the CGIL Cagliari Simona Fanzecco and the secretarial member Viviana Figus, the Honorable Amalia Schirru, the gynecologist Marco Pistis, the lawyer Rosanna Mura, the manager of the Cgil Cagliari Women's Center Diletta Mureddu and Susanna Pisano, expert in gender policies.
