Punctual tariff on separate waste collection in all Sardinian municipalities as early as 2023. This is the objective of the Region, to allow a drastic reduction of non-recyclable dry residue. The idea, in essence, is to make citizens pay the Tari on the basis (at least in part) of the quantities of “dry” waste actually produced. Not only the environment will benefit from it, but also the municipalities' coffers which, with a lower delivery to landfill or the waste-to-energy plant (ie the destinations of unsorted waste), will receive rewards.

There will also be an advantage for families and businesses which, by differentiating scrupulously, will be able to have a reduction of up to 20% of the Tari. According to an estimate provided yesterday in Cagliari by the regional councilor for the environment, Gianni Lampis, in Sardinia the average cost of the waste tax is approximately 193 euros per year per resident.

How much you save

For now, the only Sardinian municipality that has activated the punctual pricing method is Cagliari. Two other centers - Quartu (third city in Sardinia in terms of number of residents) and Nuoro - are being organized and the system should start soon. According to the guidelines presented yesterday in the councilorship, the Municipalities with at least 70% of separate waste collection that from next July 1st will adopt the punctual pricing, in 2023 will benefit from a bonus of 50% on the price of the landfill of the residual dry 25% discount for those who do not apply it. Municipalities that have reached 80% of separate waste collection, with the punctual rate, will benefit from a 75% reduction on the price of delivery of dry waste to landfill, compared to 50% of those who will not adopt it.

Future figures

The rewards for 2024, on the other hand, do not provide for any discount for centers that in 2023 will have only 70% differentiated and no punctual pricing, while there will be a 25% discount for those who will have it. With 80% of separate waste collection and punctual pricing, the Municipalities will have 50% of bonuses (against 25% of those who will not adapt). Finally, for the more virtuous administrations, with 90% separate waste collection and punctual pricing, a 75% discount will be obtained, compared to 50% for those who do not have timely pricing.

The commissioner

«We believe that this system can be fully operational from 2023. The higher costs that the Municipalities will be able to sustain to activate it», Lampis pointed out, «will be offset by the savings due to the lower landfill of the non-recyclable dry product. With a resolution of the regional council, approved last March, the regional council gave addresses to the municipalities of the island. The discounts applied to municipalities will also affect citizens and businesses. I remember, among other things, that with an average of 74%, Sardinia ranks second in the country for separate waste collection and is the first in central-southern Italy ».

Goals to achieve

The councilor for the Environment believes that the achievement of the 80% target for separate waste collection in Sardinia by this year will “also go through the adoption of the punctual pricing method. The aim is to have the lowest possible quantity of dry residue produced and delivered to the landfill ».
