Remo Girone, a beloved actor on Italian television and beyond, passed away suddenly this evening at the age of 76. The news was announced by the Sorrisi e Canzoni TV website.
Girone had been living in Monaco for some time, with his wife, the actress Vittoria , who remained by his side until his final moments. Born in Asmara, Eritrea, on December 1, 1948, to Italian parents, he returned to Italy at the age of thirteen. From a very young age, he was drawn to the theater, displaying a precocious talent that he would later hone over the course of a long and intense artistic career.
Despite his predilection for the stage, it was television that made him a true popular icon. His portrayal of Gaetano "Tano" Cariddi, the charismatic and ruthless mafia boss in the series La Piovra, cemented him in the history of Italian fiction. Having joined the cast in 1987, in the third season of the cult series directed by Damiano Damiani, Girone played the character until the seventh season, decisively contributing to the show's success and cultural impact.
Over the course of his career he has taken part in numerous other television productions , including Lo scialo (1987), Una vittoria (1988), Dalla notte all'alba (1991), Carlo Magno (1993), Dio vede e provvede (1996), Il Grande Torino (2005), Questa è la mia terra (2006) and Diritto di difesa (2004). These works have consolidated his presence on the small screen, without ever losing his connection with the theatre, where he has continued to express his great acting talent.
Girone also left his mark on film . He made his debut in Marco Bellocchio's The Seagull, and over the years he has worked in films such as Benvenuto Presidente! with Claudio Bisio, and in international productions such as Le Mans '66 - La grande sfida, in which he played Enzo Ferrari.
A versatile, profound and always measured actor , Remo Girone has been able to cross genres and languages without ever losing his distinctive style.
