“Reinhabiting Sardinia. The impact of the demographic crisis and solutions to stem depopulation” : this is the theme of a national conference scheduled for tomorrow at 10 in the Giorgio Pisano conference room, in Piazza L'Unione Sarda, in Cagliari. The event will be broadcast live on www.unionesarda.it. The initiative is by the Aldo Moro Study Center.
"At a time when Sardinia - like the whole of Italy and a large part of Europe - is facing one of the deepest demographic crises in its history, the initiative aims not to analyze once again the causes, already widely known and debated, but to build a concrete agenda of strategic, planned and coordinated actions, capable of restoring centrality to the internal, mountainous and rural territories", is what we read in a press release. "The phenomenon of depopulation is not just a statistical issue. It is a question of territorial equity, economic sustainability, social and cultural cohesion. It is the very heart of a community's survival.
After the institutional greetings of Federico Porcu (Centro Studi Aldo Moro), Giuseppe Meloni (vice president of the Sardinia Region), the introduction of Salvatore Corrias , (president of the Autonomy Commission of the Regional Council) and the speeches of Francesco Mola (rector of the University of Cagliari), Gianluca Cadeddu (Crp Sardinia Region - Programme Manager E.INS), Alessandra de Renzis (Association Riabitare l'Italia, Gran Sasso Science Institute), Michele Cammarano (president of the Internal Areas Commission of the Campania Regional Council), Alessandro Caramiello (president of the Southern Development Intergroup - Chamber of Deputies), Davide Baruffi (councillor of Programming Emilia-Romagna Region), Marco Niccolai (president of the Internal Areas Commission of the Tuscany Region), Fabio Porta (vice president of the Committee Italians in the World - Chamber of Deputies), Elena Bonetti (president of the Intergroup Demographic Emergency - Chamber of Deputies). The work will be coordinated by Aldo Aledda (Initiative Committee "Italians in the World").
"The initiative is part of a broader path of study, proposal and comparison between institutions, academia, territories and social representatives. It starts from the awareness that the demographic crisis can no longer be addressed with fragmented, episodic or symbolic policies, but requires an integrated and multilevel plan, which brings together birth rates, residential attractiveness, essential public services, policies for inclusion and work, urban regeneration, development taxation".
"The experiences already activated in Italy, in Europe and in the world", we read further in the press release, "demonstrate that it is possible to reverse the trend only if we act with coherence, foresight and determination, integrating public policies and mobilizing local energies. For Sardinia - a region with a special statute, with extensive competences and an extraordinary territorial and human heritage - it is time for institutional courage, for a shared vision and for the ability to lead, not suffer, the changes underway".
