Reggiana's one-two between the 35th and 40th minutes settled a game that Torres played well despite a short-handed squad. Scotto, Sorrentino, Nunziatini, Lunghi, and Liviero were all absent. The bench was down to just six players. Greco's side also had some bad luck (Di Stefano hit the post with the score at 0-0) and lacked precision, punishing the Sassari team beyond their limits, especially since the Emilian side had a superb Furlan in goal.

A defeat perhaps deserved, but not in proportion. Croatian Sipos won the battle of the scorers, scoring on his third chance with a header after missing the target. Di Stefano was unlucky in the 19th minute, his shot hitting the post. Furlam produced a miracle in the 37th minute on a close-range deflection off Berto, and Portanova made a steal in the 40th minute (though Scaringi still looked slow and uncertain) to double the lead.

In the second half, Reggiana led the way in pursuit of a third goal, but in the 60th minute, Furlan was the star again, tapping Bunino's beautiful header into the net, the only highlight of a modest game. Zaccagno also earned his share of the spoils, saving both Rover and Sipos, while Furlan twice denied Masala in the closing stages, most notably on a powerful free kick headed in under the crossbar.
