The bill is ready with the changes necessary to implement the reform of the Provinces approved in March 2021. The go-ahead is expected in one of the next Council meetings.

Among the corrections - made necessary by the expiry of the terms for entry into force - there is a substantial one: the provision of a referendum in all the territories involved in the reorganization. In practice, the citizens will have the last word before operations.

In the reform that leads to two metropolitan cities (Cagliari and Sassari) and to six provinces (North-East, Nuoro, Ogliastra, Medio-Campidano, Sulcis-Iglesiente, South Sardinia) , consultations were not indicated, although they are provided for by the article 43 of the special statute. Reason why, in June 2021, the Government had decided to challenge the law. However, in March 2022 the Constitutional Court had declared Rome's appeal inadmissible. Since then, the reform has not been implemented.
