The Northern League governor Luca Zaia against those who say no to the Differentiated Autonomy desired by the Northern League (promoter Calderoli) and transformed into law. And he attacks the Regions ready to propose a referendum to abolish the reform. In the front row among the protesters, also by virtue of its special statute, is Sardinia, with its president Alessandra Todde acting as a glue between the center-left colleagues.
«His is a political position detached from reality», says Zaia in the columns of Corriere della Sera, urged to respond to the Sardinian president's declarations according to which the northern regions would have enjoyed state funding and now, with the new regime, all appeals would be held. "I don't judge the current governors", adds the Venetian president, "but do we want to deny that for decades the south has suffered waste and misgovernment?".
According to Zaia, going to the referendum would mean «splitting Italy: it will be a war between Guelphs and Ghibellines. Better: between Italians and Italians."
Todde's indirect response comes from an interview given in another newspaper. The regional council was convened on Wednesday 17 July: «This is an unfair and unjust law that will make healthcare, education, transport even worse and will make the lives of citizens more difficult», says Todde, «it is dangerous and has took shape through an ordinary law with which it is claimed to undermine the constitutional structure. We cannot afford silence while the right once again tries to divide Italy in two."
The main danger for Sardinia, according to the president, is that the law «undermines its specialty, takes away essential resources for basic services and goes against article 3 of the Constitution. There is no contradiction in wanting to fight to defend our specificity and to protect the Sardinians. To those who say that Sardinia is safe because it is a Region with a special statute, we remind you that the resources come from the national dimension and that if these are reduced they will be less for Sardinia too, as has already happened. We will never accept a law that condemns the Sardinian people to backwardness."
