A painting by Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, “Diego y Yo”, was auctioned at Sotheby's in New York for a record 34.9 million dollars (about 30.8 million euros).

The BBC reports, specifying that this is the highest sum ever paid at auction for the work of a South American artist. The previous record belonged to Frida Khalo's ex-husband Diego Rivera, whose fun painting sold for $ 9.76 million in 2018.

The work “Diego y Yo”, one of his latest self-portraits, depicts a crying Kahlo with Rivera's face painted on her forehead. According to the New York Times, it was bought by the founder of a museum in Argentina, Eduard Cosantini.
