Controversy over the Meloni Government's decision to challenge Sardinia's regional law no. 12/2024 on healthcare.
A decision that – comments the Sardinian senator of the Democratic Party Marco Meloni «appears incomprehensible and contradictory. Since 2007 – adds the Democratic parliamentarian – our Region has taken full charge of the health needs on its territory, without weighing on the state budget. This means that Sardinia autonomously manages the financing of health care, a significant burden, especially considering the specific logistical and demographic difficulties of an island».
"The regional law that Minister Calderoli has proposed to challenge - Meloni continues - aims to guarantee continuity of care, avoiding interruptions of essential services for our population, particularly in an island context where healthcare faces particular challenges. To be clear, the law that is being contested is the one that provided for the possibility of recalling retired doctors. Doctors who, after having served our community for years, have decided to return to the field to help deal with the health emergency on the island and guarantee primary care coverage where there are shortages. Today a Minister and a Government tell us that their prejudices and bureaucratic formalisms prevail over the well-being and care of citizens, over the right of Sardinians to have a general practitioner".
"It is paradoxical," Meloni concludes, "that this same Government is committed to differentiated autonomy and then, when it has been assigned for decades to a Region with a special statute, attempts to reduce its effectiveness. We therefore ask the Government to provide a clear justification for this choice, which seems to go against the very principles it claims to want to promote."
