Fifty years ago, on 12 May 1974, the referendum on divorce saw a definitive no to its repeal in Italy , after a tormented process. An anniversary remembered by Emanuele Dessì, director of L'Unione Sarda who returns as a columnist - choosing and commenting on the anniversaries of the week from 6 to 12 May - on "Il giorno e la Storia" , the Rai Cultura program created by Giovanni Paolo Fontana , broadcast every day at 00.10 and in repeat at 8.30, 11.30, 14.00 and 20.10 on Rai Storia (digital terrestrial channel 54, Sky channel 805 and streaming on RaiPlay).

Dessì's week opens on Monday 6 May , returning to 1952 when the world-famous Italian pedagogist, Maria Montessori, died in Holland. At the basis of Montessori's thought, there is the principle of the pupil's freedom : only freedom favors the child's creativity, already present in his nature.

On Tuesday 7th the unforgettable Raimondo Vianello , born in 1922, is on stage: actor and television presenter, he is one of the protagonists of Italian comedy and, with Ugo Tognazzi, he creates duets that have entered the history of Italian television, as well as those with the inseparable Sandra Mondaini.

Football is the protagonist on Wednesday 8th : in 1898 , in Turin, the first Serie A football championship was played in a single day, between morning and afternoon. Genoa wins it , beating the Turin Internazionale in the final.

On Thursday 9th the memory goes to Nelson Mandela who in 1994 became the first black president of South Africa , leading the transition from the old apartheid regime to democracy, between lights and shadows.

Another president is on the scene on Friday the 10th : in 2006 , on the fourth ballot, with 543 preferences, Giorgio Napolitano was elected the eleventh president of the Italian Republic . He will be re-elected in 2013 and will be the first to hold this position twice.

On Saturday 11th we will focus on Giuseppe Garibaldi's Thousand who in 1860 landed in Marsala on the western tip of Sicily - without encountering particular resistance - and were welcomed with enthusiasm by the population.

Dessì week ends on Sunday 12 May remembering the date of the referendum on divorce in 1974 . Italians are called upon to decide whether or not to repeal the Fortuna-Baslini law of 1970, which introduced divorce. The clear victory of the "No", with 59.3 percent of the votes, confirms the possibility of dissolving the marital bond.
