The Decree of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers - proposed by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport - has been signed, which identifies the priority works and infrastructures for the phase-out of coal in Sardinia .

«This is – as stated in a joint statement from the ministries involved – a crucial step in the island's decarbonisation process , in line with the objectives of the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (Pniec)».

The decree provides for a series of strategic interventions, declared to be of public utility and urgent, for the development of new generation capacity from renewable sources and for the installation of energy storage systems.

The system of electrical interconnections is also being strengthened , both with the mainland and with Sicily, together with the strengthening of the transmission network within the island.

As regards gas , a virtual connection is being introduced that will guarantee security of supply thanks to the use of regasification terminals, Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRU) and local networks , while at the same time ensuring fair tariffs at a national level to protect Sardinian consumers.

"The Government confirms its commitments to support the island's energy transition with adequate infrastructure and a clear timeline. This concrete step paves the way for the decarbonization of industrial sectors and the reindustrialization of the region , starting with Sulcis, where our commitment to addressing the ongoing crises and transforming them into opportunities remains a priority," stated Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso .

"Our goal is to strengthen the security and sustainability of the Region's energy system , with integrated infrastructure that guarantees its development, completing the path towards the long-awaited phase-out of coal," declared Environment Minister Gilberto Pichetto.
