For those who loved Quentin Tarantino's “Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood,” or for those who were simply surprised to discover that one of his films will have a sequel currently in the works, the recent Super Bowl was, among many surprises, the opportunity to discover more about “The Adventures of Cliff Booth.”
Finally presented with its first official trailer, the film, directed by David Fincher exclusively for Netflix and based on a reworking of an old script by Tarantino, will see stuntman Cliff Booth - played by Brad Pitt - in the lead role for the first time, after previously supporting Hollywood star Rick Dalton - played by Leonardo DiCaprio - during his turbulent experiences on set.
With a release date yet to be determined, the project has attracted attention since its announcement, if only for its unusual premise: from its very genesis to Tarantino's decision not to return behind the camera and instead entrust the direction to a colleague . "The Adventures of Cliff Booth," in fact, is directly connected to "The Movie Critic," the title of what was supposed to be Tarantino's tenth and final feature film, then changed on the fly because it wasn't deemed up to the pre-established standards. The idea of entrusting the direction of the film to none other than Fincher—the creator of masterpieces such as "Seven" and "Fight Club"—was born instead from the deep mutual respect cultivated over the years, as well as the long-standing collaboration between Fincher and Netflix, to which we owe the series "Mindhunter" and the films "Mank" and "The Killer."
According to reports, the film will take place five years after the events of the prequel and will retain, in addition to the typical '70s setting, the same ironic tone, as evidenced by the provocative content—including naked women, guns, cigarettes, and expletives—which has been deliberately censored. With a specially designed makeover, Cliff Booth will return not as a stuntman, but as a charismatic fixer roaming the Hollywood studios. Joining Brad Pitt—who already won the 2019 Oscar for Best Actor for the same role—will also be Scott Caan, Elizabeth Debicki, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Carla Gugino, Holt McCallany, J.B. Tadena, and Timothy Olyphant, again playing James Stacy.
For those hoping for even a brief appearance from DiCaprio, there seems to be no good news. According to a recent interview with Deadline, the star declined Netflix's multi-million dollar offer and denied any involvement in the project: "We talked about it at the beginning. Ultimately, I'm looking forward to seeing Cliff Booth's story, but I'm not in the film." Not failing to express his admiration for Fincher, he added: "I think David Fincher is the perfect man for the job. Quentin is a huge fan of his work, as am I, and there's no one better than him to continue that legacy and tell that story. I think this is the next phase of Cliff Booth's life. I can't wait to see it."
Elizabeth Debicki confirmed the end of filming during her final appearance at the Sundance Film Festival. At the premiere of “Wicker,” she also touched on her recent involvement in “The Adventures of Cliff Booth,” declaring: “I just wrapped [David Fincher’s] (The Adventures of Cliff Booth), and it was truly a dream come true. I loved it so much. We shot it for almost six months in Los Angeles, and I loved, loved working with David, I really love him.” Regarding working with Brad Pitt, she concluded: “And I loved working with Brad. In his absolutely iconic role, yes, it was a pleasure… I was really, really happy on that set.”
Jarred Land, president of RED Digital Cinema, also celebrated the completion of the work, which began last July in Los Angeles, writing on Instagram with a photo of a clapperboard: "Last day of filming Fincher and Tarantino's new film today at RSH. It's been an honor to have such an incredible team living and breathing in our studio for much of the last year. It's been a masterclass in everything. It's going to be a great day."
