The gaze of artists like Frida Kahlo, Cindy Sherman, and Yayoi Kusama, as well as the space reclaimed by Gina Pane and Marina Abramović. "On the Other Side: Women in 20th-Century Art," the book by Sonia Borsato and Savide Mariani, will be presented on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in the Aula Magna of the Mario Sironi Academy of Fine Arts in Sassari.
The volume, published at the end of August by Postmedia Books, addresses the theme of female representation in twentieth-century art from a critical and public perspective. It is the result of a research project approved by the Academic Council and funded by the Academy, on which the faculty members worked over three years of conferences, shared research, and discussions with the Sassari Academy's student community. The volume also includes a chronology of the conferences, an atlas of female artists curated with the students, and a thematic bibliography for those studying, teaching, or simply seeking further study.
"It's not about adding names to an existing narrative," says Davide Mariani, project creator and coordinator of the Department of Communication and Art Education at the ABA in Sassari, "but about questioning the very criteria by which that narrative was written. Looking 'from the other side' is a critical gesture, of course, but above all, it is an act of collective responsibility."
