In early December, the 56-year-old partner, from Bergamo, nearly lost his leg after it got caught in a piece of machinery at a company in Arborea. A very serious workplace accident that ultimately ended well. Now, the worker's wife, Antonella Pennacchio, wants to thank the doctors who prevented the worst (the leg, which was at risk of amputation, is safe), as well as the Sardinians who stood by the couple and offered every possible support.

Here is his letter.

There are places you remember for the sea, others for the wind, still others for a beauty that needs no explanation. And then there are places you remember because, in the most difficult moments, they keep you standing. For us, Sardinia has become this. My partner came to Arborea for work and remained with a serious and traumatic injury. An accident that, due to its dynamics and severity, could have had irreversible consequences. Yet, thanks to prompt action, expertise, and timely clinical decisions, his leg was saved. When time stood still and fear took over, we encountered a healthcare system that is not just about technology, but also about humanity. In the Emergency Room of the SS. Annunziata Hospital in Sassari , we found professionalism, clarity, and respect. In the Traumatology and Orthopedics department, the care was attentive, rigorous, but above all, humane. A sincere and profound thank you to the head physician, Dr. Cudoni , and to the other doctors who treated us with such expertise and dedication. We are grateful for their ability to intervene at crucial moments, for their clear explanations, and for their unwavering attention, even when the situation was complex and the outcome far from certain. A special thank you to the head nurse and all the nurses: caring hands, comforting words, and constant presence. Because often, it's not just the treatment that makes the difference, but the way it's delivered.

And then there were the Sardinian people. Those who don't make a noise, but are there. Those who help you without asking, who support you naturally, who make you feel less alone even when you're far from home. A sincere thank you to all the taxi drivers and owners of the accommodations who, with unexpected generosity and sensitivity, helped us find accommodations every time, making a long and complex hospital stay more bearable. At a time when we were wounded guests, we felt welcomed. Now we return to the mainland, with a long road to recovery still ahead and a gratitude that stays with us. Because there are lands that are not just visited: they are encountered. Thank you, Sardinia. We will not forget it.

Antonella Pennacchio
