Call it "Berenjena" as the Spanish do, or "Aubergine" in French, or even in English, since "Eggplant" is used mostly by Americans. But who knows in the US how good "La Mirinzana" is, both as a "forru" dish and as a song that is considered by many to be the anthem of Sassari.
Piero Del Drò, son of Tony, who was one of the protagonists of the golden age of Sassari folk song, has just released – it must be said – a curious album with the same song but in four different languages, entitled “La storia della Mirinzana”.
Performing the various versions are British guitarist Jack Evans, Ozieri native Giuseppe Masia, a cabaret artist and singer with 23 published albums, and another Sardinian guitarist, Giovanni Porcheddu. Naturally, alongside the newly translated versions, there will be the historic version recorded by the Trio Folk Sassari, composed of Tony Del Drò, Giovanni Maria Santoni, and Lionello Siddi, which half a century ago sold some 800,000 copies, nearly reaching the gold record mark, which at the time required a million copies. Today, with those numbers, eight gold records have been won.
The album, produced by Piero Del Drò himself, will be distributed in various countries on the Sardigna Music Indipendente label.
