Expensive feelings. A 68-year-old man from Siligo met a woman in a bar years ago, maintaining a long-distance relationship with her . The man was surviving on a €300 disability pension, but after selling a piece of land, he had access to a much larger sum. And the 61-year-old woman from Cagliari began making a series of financial demands of her friend, initially justifying them by citing her cancer diagnosis .

From 2016 to 2019, the 68-year-old made 142 postal money orders , paying them the sum of over 65 thousand euros .

The woman told him one day that she was in Reggio Emilia, where she had become homeless after being evicted from a bed and breakfast. He was so concerned about the fate of his "companion" that he went to the Carabinieri station to ask for information. The officers immediately realized something was wrong and filed a fraud complaint against the 61-year-old, a charge heard yesterday in court in Sassari. Prosecutor Alessia Sanna deemed the charges proven and requested a sentence of one year and four months . The plaintiff's lawyer, Giuseppe Melis, focused on the deceptions he believed the woman had perpetrated on his client, taking advantage of his circumstances, a naive person who lives alone with very little social contact. The defendant was represented by Carlo Demurtas of the Cagliari Bar Association. Judge Valentina Nuvoli adjourned the case for further arguments and sentencing.
