Analyzing the microbiome and the composition of microbial populations could be the key to discovering a correlation with longevity and health status. It has been shown that changes in the composition of the intestinal microbiome can be associated with healthy aging or, conversely, with a reduction in survival.
The study "Oral microbiome: longitudinal study in the ancient and recent population of the Ogliastrina and Barbagia di Seulo communities" carried out in the Molecular Biology Laboratory of San Giovanni di Dio by Professor Orrù, analyzed the oral microbiome in the population of elderly, centenarians and centenarians from Ogliastra to discover the secrets of a long and healthy life recognizing that diet plays a key role in the selection of species.
These results were possible thanks to the modern technologies available to the San Giovanni di Dio laboratory and to the highly efficient method used to extract the DNA from dental calculus dating back to the 1800s.
The talk “15 minutes with…” is edited by Aou Cagliari News, the newspaper of the university hospital. An agile and simple format, it includes 15 minutes of discussions with specialists and the possibility for the public to ask questions live.
