On Friday, November 8th in Porto Torres, in the conference room of the Port Museum, a meeting is scheduled to focus on the tourism potential that comes from projects based on the interconnection between cultural initiatives and archaeological sites. An expression of this fortunate union is the exhibition “Every ship needs a Port” inaugurated last September 27th at the old port and open every day from 9 am to 5 pm until November 10th.
The installation was born from the desire of the Municipality of Turritano, in collaboration with the Municipal Tourist Office and the cooperative Memoria Storica, to contribute to enhancing the area below the steps between the southern pier and the maritime station in which, in the early 2000s, several Roman structures were found: port constructions, buildings with mosaic floors, canalization systems, wells and remains of the road network that connected the port with the center and with the rural villas.
The exhibition hosts the works of 24 Sardinian artists who explore the concept of port, not only as a physical place, but also as an ideal space in which life stories such as departures, arrivals, encounters, tragedies and salvations materialize . An investigation impressed on 48 works, most of them made specifically for the exhibition with various techniques, from tempera paintings to sculptures, through installations and matrices for woodcuts.
So far, the exhibition has been visited by hundreds of people who have had the opportunity to access a fascinating site that is usually not open to the public and which has become, for the occasion, a destination for numerous school groups and dozens of students who have been able to take advantage of guided tours and participate in free workshops, engaging with the theme of the port and comparing themselves with the works and archaeological excavations visible in the exhibition route. Precisely to discuss the enormous tourist potential that derives from projects based on the interconnection between cultural initiatives and archaeological sites, a finissage is scheduled for Friday 8 November where it will be possible to discuss with the guests who will take turns in the interventions and with the artists who have exhibited the works.
The meeting will be held in the conference room of the Port Museum , in via Antonietta Bassu, and will include speeches by the president of the city council Franco Satta, the councilor for Culture Maria Bastiana Cocco, the institutional representative of the Academy of Fine Arts “M. Sironi”, Eugenio Cossu former mayor of Porto Torres, the curator of the exhibition Baingio Cuccu and, of course, the artists involved in the project.
The event , open to anyone who wants to intervene and talk about the city, the most important sites and the tourist potential linked to cultural initiatives intertwined with the city's historical and archaeological heritage, will start at 5:30 pm at the entrance to the Porto Antico where a double guided tour will be held: Franco Satta will focus on the works related to the archaeological excavations and the enhancement of the site while Baingio Cuccu will focus on the works on display. At around 6:15 pm, we will move to the nearby conference room of the Museo del Porto to give life to a moment of discussion aimed at deepening the links and connections between the city, archaeology and contemporary art.
