Alessandro Deiola has no choice: his isn't the best goal of 2025 according to the public who voted for the Puskás Award, the prestigious prize created by FIFA to celebrate the most spectacular goal of the year.

Santiago Montiel took the top step of the podium with a breathtaking overhead kick for Independiente against Independiente Rivadavia. A skillful move that won over fans and judges, becoming the symbol of daring and surprising football.

The “golazo” came in May 2025, during a match in Argentina's Liga Profesional de Fútbol: the 25-year-old, cousin of world-class hero Gonzalo Montiel, defied the laws of physics by unleashing a powerful left-footed shot from outside the area, a finish destined to go around the world.

However, there is still a question mark over the complete ranking : it has not been revealed whether the spectacular move in Cagliari-Venezia on 18 May, concluded by the rossoblù number 14 with a perfect right-footed shot into the top corner, is among the goals most appreciated by the fans.

For the nominations, FIFA considered goals scored between August 11, 2024, and August 2, 2025. Deiola's remains the only Italian goal in the running, in a roll of honor that over the years has crowned champions such as Zlatan Ibrahimović, Neymar, and Cristiano Ronaldo.
