Disruptions and malfunctions in the digital payment network, with POS out of order throughout Italy and thousands of users worried. The problem was also recorded in Sardinia , where reports are pouring in, especially from Bper Banco di Sardegna customers . The fault that caused credit and debit cards and cash withdrawals to go haywire (although not for all payment circuits) is due to a disruption in the Worldline network , the French fintech company active globally in payment services and whose services are used by several banks. "Worldline's services have been affected by connection problems to its data centers in Italy, due to an interruption in service by third parties," the company said in a statement, explaining that the impact "is mainly localized in Italy, with some collateral effects in other markets ." The cause, however, is thought to be linked to an accident that occurred in Switzerland during work by local authorities to install some gas pipes. Worldline specified that "they have seriously damaged our supplier's cables and network."
The first unexpected events began yesterday around 11:25 . The online platform Downdetector, which monitors interruptions in digital services, highlighted several reports of problems with banks and payment systems received starting from mid-morning. But despite initial hope, the fault has not yet been resolved . On the Worldline website, on a backup page of the Merchant Services world, a list of companies that were allegedly involved in the problems is published, including some banks, including foreign ones, and several financial services operators such as American Express, Diners Club, Maestro, Mastercard, PayPal, Nexi, Visa. Nexi Payments indicates that it has received a report from Worldline about an "incident relating to a generic and widespread interruption of the network in Italy", which is having an impact on some payment services.
Bancomat and Pagobancomat report having received the same report. Users, however, do not report problems with the Mastercard or Visa circuit.
