September, let's go: it's time to pay. And pay dearly. Driven by fuel and energy prices, both of which have been soaring for months, once the holidays are over, shocking prices are hitting almost everywhere: from shopping carts to leisure activities, from transportation to personal care.

The picture is grim across Italy, where according to Codacons, the fall blow is worth €633 per family, but it's even worse in Sardinia: "We're paying the price of insularity," sighs Marco Medda, provincial president of Confesercenti, from Cagliari. In numbers: "Transportation costs are about 20% higher than in the rest of Italy." The result? "The increases here are more pronounced than on the mainland," confirms Marco Mainas, president of Confcommercio for Southern Sardinia.

Increases throughout Italy

But let's start with the national picture. Il Sole 24 Ore has calculated price increases based on ISTAT data compared to 2021, and the results are worrying: in five years, supermarket shopping has increased by 30 percent in Italy. Some products have seen record increases: strawberries, tomatoes, eggs, extra virgin olive oil, rice, potatoes, and eggplant have increased by over 40%, strawberries and roasted coffee by over 50%. And speaking of coffee: getting it at the bar today costs an average of 21% more than five years ago, while the price at the pizzeria has risen by 24%, the price at the mechanic's by 20%, and the price at the hairdresser's by 14%.
