The role of genetics in drug response for increasingly personalized therapies. The advantages and implications of precision medicine will be the focus of the meeting “Training Course on Germline and Somatic Pharmacogenetics", scheduled for September 12 and 13 at Sa Manifattura, Cagliari.
The two days of high-level training for doctors and researchers - organized by Sigu, the Italian Society of Human Genetics, by Sardegna Ricerche with the Biomed platform and by the University of Sassari with the Department of Biomedical Sciences - revolve around pharmacogenetics, one of the most consolidated approaches to personalized medicine that aims to optimize pharmacological therapies based on the patient's genetic profile.
"This course is part of a broader context of initiatives that aim to promote the growth of pharmacogenetics in the national health system, a process already at an advanced stage in other European countries, such as the Netherlands", underlined Professor Matteo Floris of the University of Sassari, who together with Professor Monica Miozzo of the University of Milan Statale conceived the event. The event, supported by the Fondazione di Sardegna, has among the speakers, from Italian Universities and Clinical Centers of Medical Genetics, also some of the top international experts, such as the pharmacologist Sir Munir Pirmohamed of the University of Liverpool.
Pharmacogenetics is establishing itself as one of the branches of medical genetics with greater clinical utility, the two days of training and discussion will address various topics: from applications in cancer treatment to those for psychiatry. Furthermore, the ethical-legal aspects related to the Italian regulatory framework will be addressed.
