The mobilization of the workers of Portovesme srl arrived in Cagliari with a garrison in front of Villa Devoto, the representative office of the regional council, to solicit a political intervention to avoid the shutdown of the plants.

A crisis situation that has continued since the end of 2021 when the company, due to the excessive costs incurred for energy, had announced the stop to the production of zinc, with an annual capacity of 100 thousand tons.

Now that price rises are even more pronounced, also due to the war in Ukraine, 1,500 jobs in Sulcis are at risk. For this reason, the chemical unions have mobilized, together with the "colleagues" of the metalworkers, to give a "wake up call" to the Region and to Governor Solinas who will meet the workers' representatives on Monday 4 April at 11 am.

"Today we reiterated that the priority is the energy issue - said Emanuele Madeddu of Filctem-Cgil from the megaphone, also representing Cisl and Uil - the company told us that in a few weeks, in the absence of different news, the productions will be stopped completely. Well, this situation has come a long way because already in October we asked for a meeting to address the issues of expensive energy and more structural problems and today we had to mobilize people to get that table ".

The unions have announced, however, that they are ready to carry out all the initiatives of the struggle: "We will not allow either politics or society to stop that factory because we cannot afford it and we are ready to make the barricades".

They asked Solinas to be an "ally" in this battle after "perhaps, at this stage, we overslept and our wake-up call was necessary with our presence here in Cagliari: it is no coincidence that after announcing the mobilization , two calls have arrived in 48 hours ".

On Tuesday 5 April, at 8 am, the new general assembly of factory workers is scheduled to discuss the outcome of the meeting and define the next steps.
