Fragments of human bones in the Fiume Santo area, in the territory of Porto Torres. A necropolis with several examples of human remains found during the construction of a photovoltaic system.
The discovery was made on Monday, March 24, in the construction site set up on the right side of the river of the same name, not far from the sea. The person who raised his hand to block the work was the archaeological surveillance officer of the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage of Sassari and Nuoro who started the investigations to establish the typology and chronology of the necropolis, an unpublished cemetery a few steps from the Roman villa that came to light in the summer of 1983, to which it could be connected.
Just a few meters below the surface, remains of bones of children and adults of all ages have resurfaced. It will be up to archaeologists to identify a date and the type of area, which is located not far from the ancient Roman colony of Turris Libissonis. Nearby is the Roman villa, in the territory of Sassari, north of the mouth of the river, which came to light during the works started for the construction of the second coal-fired unit of the Fiume Santo thermoelectric power plant. Also nearby, west of Porto Torres, in 1994 a paleontological site was identified which returned thousands of animal bones that allowed the ecosystem of the territory to be reconstructed in the Miocene.
