Federico La Penna returns to refereeing in the top Italian league, following the Inter-Juventus incident that cost him a two-game relegation to Serie B. He will referee Pisa-Cagliari , a match scheduled for Sunday, March 15, at 3:00 PM. Bercigli and Trinchieri will be the assistant referees, and Forneau will be the fourth official. Paterna will be assigned to the VAR, with Camplone acting as the VAR referee.

In the current Serie A season, La Penna has refereed the Sardinians twice, overseeing both matches between Cagliari and Genoa (3-3 in the first leg at Unipol Domus; 3-0 in favor of De Rossi 's men in the away match at Marassi). La Penna has also already refereed a Pisa-Cagliari match, on April 10, 2023. On that occasion, in the match of the 32nd matchday of Serie B, the rossoblù failed to go beyond a 0-0 draw.

In short, the precedents don't smile on Pisacane 's boys. Since Cagliari returned to Serie A in 2023, La Penna has refereed six of the rossoblù's matches , without the latter ever managing to find a victory (four defeats and two draws overall).
