After Pep Guardiola's rejection, Paolo Maldini and Leonardo are turning to Andrea Pirlo. And according to several websites, he will be the new coach of the Italian national team.
Pirlo's move to the Azzurri has accelerated rapidly; the former midfielder has reportedly said yes, and an agreement—including financial—has been reached. A minimum of four years is being discussed, as is logical for a cycle leading up to the 2030 World Cup. But Maldini's vision is long-term, a rebuild that should start with 12- and 13-year-olds. Therefore, the horizon is broader, and Pirlo, barring any failures, could serve as the national team coach for up to ten years.
For now, the Italian Football Federation hasn't made any official announcements, according to reports. And according to several outlets, one final piece is missing: Giovanni Malagò's approval, as he would prefer a coach with more experience and more trophies (Mancini or Conte).
"Many can be successful, but we want to find a harmony of thought. Then, with him, we'll set the direction, in a cascade, down the entire supply chain," Maldini and Leonardo explained a few days ago.
