"What's needed today is a collective act of responsibility from the entire dairy processing system. A clear, public, and concrete assumption of responsibility: stopping the unjustified downward spiral of selling prices, avoiding panic-driven or speculative trading, and enhancing the product's value through orderly inventory management, in full compliance with market and competition rules."
This is what we read in an open letter that Coldiretti Sardegna sent to the entire dairy industry on the island regarding the situation in the sheep and goat dairy sector, with particular reference to Pecorino Romano.
"If there is a real crisis, let's demonstrate it with numbers. If there are financial difficulties, let's address them with the available tools," the agricultural organization observes. "If, however, someone is fueling an exaggerated portrayal of the crisis to gain advantage, it is necessary to shed full light on it. The Sardinian dairy industry today has an enormous responsibility: to defend the value of the product, the stability of the supply chain, and the income of farmers. This time, we don't need new announcements. What's needed is responsibility, transparency, and consistent behavior." "And those who believe they must continue to sell Pecorino Romano at ever-decreasing prices should at least have the courage to publicly explain why, clarifying the actual commercial conditions that drive these choices," Coldiretti observes. " We still have plenty of time to reverse the trend, halt the downward spiral, and create the conditions for Pecorino Romano to regain its value. Production is firmly concentrated in Sardinia. We have the quantities, the financial tools, and the ability to manage the market intelligently."
"The Sardinian sheep and goat sector is healthy. It cannot be dragged into a crisis by those who might have an interest in fueling it," the letter concludes. "And those who, through proven misconduct, attempt to undermine its stability must be isolated, not allowed to continue."
