There will be space for the popular traditions of Sardinia at the Expo, inaugurated on April 13, and which will continue until October 13 in Osaka, Japan, which has already hosted this event in 1970.
Sardinia is not among the 12 regions for which, in the large and articulated pavilion of Italy, specific events are planned for their promotion but on May 3rd the masks of the Mamoiada carnival will be the real protagonists of a conference and an anthropological re-enactment with a parade of traditional Italian masks organized by UNPLI-Unione delle Pro Loco d'Italia.
Three representatives of mamuthones and issohadores of the Pro Loco of Mamoiada were also invited to the event, but the association decided, at its own expense, to participate in the event in Japan with 26 of its members. They will parade after the conference, offering a more incisive and precise cross-section of the meaning of this mask and the mysterious and fascinating rite that accompanies their particular parade during the carnival period.
"It is an extraordinary commitment that we have decided to face - explains the president Andrea Canneddu - but it seems to us the best way to adequately make known this typical expression of the culture of our community and of the whole of Sardinia. Just as we have done in the past in many other parts of the world".
The delegation of mamuthones and issohadores will also be received in Tokyo by the Italian ambassador Gianluigi Benedetti. The masks of Mamoiada will not be the only ones to represent the island at the event scheduled in Osaka. The participation of a reduced delegation of boes and merdules of Ottana is also expected.
