The Supramonte is enriched by new and important discoveries in the Gonasula Cave (Su Guanu di Oliena), a destination for enthusiasts from all over the world since 1985.
Here, in recent weeks, Seui speleologist Marcello Moi, 65, (who also led the discovery of the Uliana Branch in 2024) identified a new exploration front, connecting Uliana to the "Seui Branch," where a total of 7 km of tunnels have been identified. Fossils of the "Prolagus sardus," an ancient species of rat that lived for millennia in the island's caves, and other living species, including chilopod snakes, await confirmation from paleontologists, have also been discovered.
"It all started in late 2024," says Moi, a member of the Mazzella Speleological Center in Dorgali. "While I was exploring the flooded cave, I had to find a bypass to avoid the lake, which I would have had to swim or dive across. I had no choice but to search for a new passage that would allow me to overcome the obstacle. I was greatly surprised when, having ascended more than 20 meters, I discovered that the cavity extended even further."
