Nuclear in Sardinia, Todde: «Yes to fusion, no to fission: speculation on my words»

Alessandra Todde, this morning, at the Festival delle Regioni, on stage in Venice with the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Pichetto Fratin, next to her: «We want nuclear power that is clean, but there is strong concern about waste management, with a very strong no. If we have to discuss existing nuclear power, we would have some preclusions. If there are technologies that allow waste management, no preclusions: I only have one face but I have the duty to defend a single environment».
The same President of the Region on social media, in the afternoon: «No to exploitation, let's clarify. In Sardinia, no to power plants and waste storage».
Statements that appear to be in clear contradiction. But the first ones, for Todde, would have been the object of "pathetic exploitation".
"Our council", he attacks after his words have raised more than one controversy, "has inherited a 10-year-old energy plan, two coal-fired power plants, a power plant that uses refinery waste, underused hydroelectric power and widespread fear among citizens of an invasion of wind and photovoltaic plants that are transforming our environment into an industrial one".
Once the criticism phase was over, Todde added: «Today I reiterated, during my speech at the Festival delle Regioni, that it is necessary to use all possible levers to make our region competitive by lowering the price of energy and cutting bills for the Sardinians. But certainly not by bartering the environment and landscape, which for us are assets of identity».
Sardinia, for the governor, "suffers from discrimination on energy and logistics infrastructures and I will never allow our territory to become a battlefield for those who want to speculate or profit."
Then the heart of the matter: «I also answered the journalist's question about our Region's position on the issue of nuclear energy. We are not ideological, we are in favor of nuclear fusion, but against fission (that of current power plants, to be clear) and we have no intention of taking charge of the waste. In fact, I have stated several times that I will never accept that Sardinia should host the repository. Our opposition is not only a political position but a choice consistent with the popular will. The Sardinian people expressed themselves very clearly with a referendum. Without forgetting that the industrial methods of managing nuclear power are linked to old-generation power plants. Even the mini reactors are still in the experimental phase and use a technology that produces waste. For us, this is therefore an unviable path».
