After last-minute negotiations between Washington and Ottawa failed, Trump's new 50% tariffs on several Canadian products including cement and hockey sticks took effect today.

Imports worth $20 billion were affected.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced equivalent tariffs on goods arriving from the US.

The two countries have been at odds for decades on trade issues, particularly in key areas such as Canadian timber imports and US access to the dairy market. But since Trump returned to the White House, the conflict has escalated.
