The new provinces are safe. The Constitutional Court has declared inadmissible the Government's appeal against the law that brings to six intermediate bodies (Gallura, Nuoro, Ogliastra, Oristano, Medio Campidano and Sulcis Iglesiente) and to two Metropolitan Cities (Sassari in addition to Cagliari).

The appeal dates back to June last year, while the Regional Council had approved the reform two months earlier. Rome had censured Article 6 of the law relating to the verification of the will of the territories, arguing, in practice, the mandatory use of the referendum before any modification of the provincial constituencies. Consultations which obviously did not take place. The Council, however, declared inadmissibility because the appellant should have extended the complaint to the entire law, and since he did not, evidently "the interest in the appeal is lacking".
