«New electoral law that guarantees minorities in the Regional Council»: the signature collection begins

In Sardinia , popular mobilization begins in support of the proposed electoral law that also guarantees minorities representation in the Regional Council.
The initiative, already supported by numerous signatures, was launched by the network “SardDegna Iniziativa Popolare”, which today sent to all the municipalities of the island the forms «for the subscription of a bill that overcomes a failed presidentialism, affirms the pure proportional system for the election of the Regional Council and introduces the instrument of constructive no confidence as an element of stabilization».
The president of the network is Lucia Chessa, presidential candidate in the last regional elections.
"In 2024, for the third time, Sardinian citizens were forced to vote in regional elections, with an electoral law unworthy of democracy. As a result of the double threshold that has no equal in any country that aspires to call itself democratic and the majority bonus that, as is evident, automatically translates into damage to minorities, more than 60,000 Sardinians, among the 52% of those entitled to vote who went to vote, have no representative in the Regional Council. They are 9% of citizens who, refusing to abstain, went to vote, but were denied the fundamental right to representation", reads a note.
By voting for the electoral law currently in force in Sardinia, "the two large groups, the centre-right and the centre-left, have developed a system that will see them alternate for a long time in the government of the region, preventing other instances, although strongly present in Sardinian society, from finding representation in the Regional Council".
"With this unworthy law, in 2013, a false bipolarism was essentially built that, although it does not exist in the legitimate complexity that enriches the political thought of the Sardinians, artificially materializes when the Regional Council is composed, which, on the contrary, to maintain authority, cannot be so brutally exclusive, but must represent everyone", the document continues, "The direct election of presidents, accompanied by the inevitable majority bonus, far from giving citizens greater spaces of representation, has in fact completely expropriated them of the right to have representative regional councils and has opened the way to unproductive legislative assemblies, hostage of increasingly stronger executives. Stable councils, but not for this reason capable of carrying out the government actions necessary for Sardinia".
For the proponents, the time has come for a change: «The story of the popular initiative law Pratobello, signed by more than 210,000 citizens, yet ignored by the assembly of Via Roma, has highlighted the abysmal distance between the regional council and the requests that move powerfully among the Sardinian people».
"All those who share the content of the proposal and the path used to bring it to the attention and discussion of the Sardinian Regional Council are invited to join and contribute to the signature collection that will begin on February 27. It will be possible to sign in all the Municipalities as well as at the stands currently being organized."
