The Italian Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired Territorial Section of Cagliari celebrates the National Guide Dog Day on Sunday 23 October at 10 in the Giorgio Pisano conference room of the Unione Sarda in Cagliari.

The event represents the most important annual event regarding the right of access for guide dogs to places open to the public. The Helen Keller Regional Center of Messina, the Lions District 108L, L'Unione Sarda collaborate.

In Italy, contrary to what happens in other countries of the European Union, citizens' awareness of the right of access of guide dogs for the blind is very limited, despite the national, regional and community legislation providing for it.
This widespread ignorance often degenerates into unpleasant attitudes based on preconceptions , relating for example to the alleged "behavioral and health hazard" of a guide dog, or into attitudes that put the blind person in serious difficulty who often finds himself marginalized.

"Even today - says the President of the Italian Blind Union of Cagliari, Maria Basciu - there are episodes of discrimination despite the fact that for almost fifty years Law 37/1974, integrated and amended by Laws 376/1988 and 60/2006, has established that the visually impaired person has the right to be accompanied by their guide dog in any place without any limitation, on trips, on public transport and in general in all establishments open to the public. The goal of the National Guide Dog Day - continues Maria Basciu - is to raise public awareness on the acceptance of this essential instrument of autonomy and mobility for the blind and to remember what are the regulatory provisions we have for facilitate a full and conscious use ".
