One is out. Roberto Marceddu is throwing in the towel and ending his administrative stint in Gairo. "After thirty exciting years, sometimes challenging, sometimes exciting, presumably, I will end my tenure as municipal administrator next June." The three-time mayor clarifies the reasons for his resignation: "Unfortunately, I must acknowledge the impossibility not only of finding unity in the town, but also of presenting an alternative list for the June contest. I face vetoes and discrimination. If there are no changes, it's clear I must withdraw from the competition, meaning even those who aspired to express their support for us will be unable to do so."
Open game
With Marceddu facing the end of his reign, barring a last-minute dramatic turn of events, the running for mayor is still for outgoing Sergio Lorrai (Democratic Party) and his former deputy, Francesco Carta. Among the names on the list of the latter, a member of the Reform Party and provincial councilor for Roads, are Mario Lobina, a minority councilor; Tomasino Piras, a dissident councilor from the majority; Giuseppe Cannata; and Giada Malfatti. Among the younger candidates are Martina Deligia and Letizia Mascia, delegate for the Taquisara district. "The team," Carta says, "is complete. The list was born under the banner of cohesion and a sense of responsibility, uniting diverse spirits for a solid and ambitious administrative project. The group represents an important political and social synthesis, successfully bringing together the experience of members of the outgoing mayor's majority, the critical and constructive contributions of minority members, and former candidates from the Marceddu list." Waiting for the names of the list that will support Lorrai.
The big picture
Anticipation is growing as the situation in Ilbono becomes more defined. While the candidacy of outgoing mayor Giampietro Murru has been official for some time, a duel is looming with Emiliano Piroddi (Democratic Party), a majority councilor who lives in Urzulei. Here, at the foot of the Supramonte, the name of Giuseppe Mesina, former mayor between 2000 and 2010, appears to be cooling. Giampiero Cabiddu, an engineer, is expected to challenge outgoing mayor Ennio Arba (Democratic Party). The situation in Loceri is clearer, with outgoing Gianfranco Lecca (regional secretary of the Socialist Party) up against Alberto Pilia. The scenario has also been defined in the three towns with a single list, with the outgoing mayors vying for a second term: in Arzana, Angelo Stochino is filing his civic list; in Elini, despite some difficulty in assembling his list, Vitale Pili is returning; and in Ussassai, Chicco Usai has had his team ready for some time.
