THE DISEASE - Multiple sclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system that can lead to progressive disability and is caused by an abnormal immune system response that causes inflammation and damages myelin and neurons.
THE DATA - In Italy, the disease affects 126,000 people, 198 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, with twice the prevalence in women than in men. More than 3,400 new cases are estimated per year, equal to an incidence of 6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Sardinia is an exception, where the incidence of the disease is higher than in the rest of the Italian regions. On the island, in fact, there are 370 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, with a double incidence compared to the peninsula, 12 cases out of 100,000.
TREATMENT - Currently there is no therapy that can completely block multiple sclerosis but there are numerous drugs available that are used to modify its course, treat relapses and manage symptoms. It remains very important to monitor the progress of the disease through specialized tests such as MRI capable of monitoring the appearance of new lesions and the response to drug therapy.
THE TALK - The talk “15 minutes with…” is edited by Aou Cagliari News, the newspaper of the university hospital. Agile and simple format, it provides 15 minutes of question and answer with the specialists and the possibility for the public to ask questions live.
