The world of football is mourning the death of Marios Oikonomo , a former Greek defender with a long history in Italian leagues with Cagliari Calcio, Bologna FC 1909, SPAL, SSC Bari, and UC Sampdoria . The footballer died at the age of 33 , nine days after a serious car accident in which he was involved while riding his motorcycle in his hometown of Ioannina.
According to initial reports, the motorcycle ridden by Oikonomou collided with a car. The defender suffered serious head injuries in the collision and was rushed to the hospital , where he underwent critical surgery.
Oikonomou began his career at PAS Giannina before moving to Cagliari in 2013. Over the next few years, he built a significant part of his career in Italian football, becoming a household name, especially in Serie A and Serie B.
