Tragedy struck last night in Monserrato, right across from the municipal cemetery. A 91-year-old pensioner, Francesco Ambu, was struck by a car while crossing the street at a pedestrian crossing and died almost instantly.

The accident occurred around 6:30 PM on Via Giulio Cesare, one of the city's busiest roads, a short distance from state road 554.

According to initial reports, the elderly man was crossing the road when a Fiat Punto, driven by a man in his twenties, struck him. The cause of the accident may have been related to poor visibility in the dark, but the investigation is still ongoing.

The driver stopped immediately and, although in shock, cooperated with emergency services. Emergency medical services and the Carabinieri from the Quartu Company's mobile radio unit responded to the scene, but all attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful.

The impact caused severe traffic disruption: Via Giulio Cesare was closed for several hours, creating traffic jams in both directions and disruptions on state highway 554. The investigation was carried out by the Carabinieri with the assistance of the local police.

The young driver was taken to the Santissima Trinità hospital for routine checks, while the Public Prosecutor's Office ordered the body be returned to the family for funeral services.
