While we wait to see what could be Tom Cruise's final appearance as special agent Ethan Hunt, new details are emerging about the upcoming "Mission Impossible - The Final Reckoning", a direct sequel to the previous "Dead Reckoning", also directed by Christopher McQuarrie and a chapter in the saga that aims, with its action sequences and breathtaking visual effects, to be the most adrenaline-pumping and exciting ever.
Due out this year, the title aims to raise the bar of the experience like never before, potentially positioning itself as Cruise's swan song within the film series, and thus closing the circle - barring any surprises - of a time on the set that lasted almost thirty years.
The eighth chapter, once again written and directed by McQuarrie, will continue Ethan's investigations on the trail of a dangerous artificial intelligence called "The Entity", capable of assuming an autonomous consciousness and infiltrating any defense system. After recovering the key needed to deactivate it, Ethan will head in search of the Russian submarine K-599 Sevastopol, where the central system of the AI is kept hidden, far from the surface. This time, Cruise will have a top-level cast at his side, including Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Henry Czerny and Frederick Schmidt.
Finding himself filming a good portion of the shoot in the United Kingdom on this occasion, Cruise wanted to reiterate his love for the land and the Anglo-Saxon culture. For these reasons, the star has received the status of honorary British citizen and will be celebrated at the British Film Institute for his decades of commitment. Speaking about these awards, Cruise told the Daily Mail: "I've been making films in the UK for over 40 years and I have no intention of stopping." Even maestro Kenneth Branagh could not help but praise his colleague for his contribution, stating: "He's an honorary Brit now, he enjoys the atmosphere and is always polite when he is recognized. He's a guy who laughs easily and loves what he does so much, his enthusiasm is contagious."
Cruise also spoke about his love for the United Kingdom in a previous interview dating back to 2022, saying at the time: “I think I’m an Anglophile. I spend a lot of time in Britain and not just for work. I just love it here. It’s a great mix of old and new. I love going to historic places, like the Tower of London, Nelson’s Column, Buckingham Palace and all those amazing places that are full of history.”
As for the amazing stunts he performed on set, the star has finally revealed his secret touch: a high-protein breakfast of sausages and an excessive number of eggs. Interviewed by People magazine, after being asked how he manages to sustain stunts like the one that sees him hanging from the wings of a biplane, he said: “I actually eat a huge breakfast. The amount of energy it takes... I train really hard for that wing walk. I eat sausages and about a dozen eggs, bacon, toast, coffee and liquids. I eat a lot because it’s cold up there. We’re at high altitude. My body burns a lot of calories.”
Revealing that he was inspired to shoot scenes like this by wingwalkers, those daredevil artists capable of jumping between the wings of airplanes, he added: "I remember seeing old footage of wingwalkers. Those aircraft traveled at 65-80 kilometers per hour. This aircraft is over 200 kilometers per hour. When I got out on the wing I realized that it takes your breath away."
Finally, tenderly recounting that her late mother was glad she didn’t know the details of this sequence before it was completed, she quoted her exact words: “Oh, honey, I’m so glad you didn’t tell me sooner!”
