Sofia Goggia won the bronze medal in the downhill race in Milan-Cortina. American Breezy Johnson took gold, and Germany's Emma Aicher took silver.
A race marked, unfortunately, by Lindsey Vonn's shocking fall: the American, one of today's favorites, fell just seconds into the race, before the first intermediate mark. Silence fell in the finish area, and the skier's scream and cries of pain could be heard.
The images clearly show both legs twisting during the frightening fall.
The 41-year-old Minnesotan was hoisted onto the helicopter and taken to the first aid station, where initial assessments will be conducted and a decision will be made as to whether she will be sent to the Codivilla Olympic Hospital in Cortina d'Ampezzo. Transfer to hospitals in Belluno or Treviso is also possible.
The match resumed after an interruption of approximately twenty minutes.
